Emotional overeating is when you turn to food to manage difficult or uncomfortable feelings, to provide comfort or distraction. 
If you enjoy foods as a reward or as a way of offering comfort such as reminding you of a childhood memory from time to time, this is not problematic and it is actually normal to comfort eat sometimes.  
 
However, when it is the only coping mechanism you have and it is happening too regularly, you feel guilt and shame around this and feel caught up in a cycle that you can’t break, then this is the time to reach out for support.
